Every October, National Cyber Security Awareness Month reminds us how important it is to stay safe online—both at home and in the workplace.
Since this initiative started in 2003, the number of internet users worldwide has exploded from around 700 million to more than 3.5 billion. Unfortunately, not all of those users have good intentions. No matter the size of your business, if you use a computer, you’re a potential target for cybercriminals. In fact, by 2019, cybercrime was expected to cost businesses more than $2.1 trillion.
While having strong security measures and cyber insurance is crucial, following a few simple steps can make it harder for hackers to access your business data.
1. Set Clear Computer Use Rules
Establish guidelines for employees about what programs, websites, and software they can access on work computers. Unauthorized programs can open the door to cyber threats, so be sure to enforce these rules.
2. Strengthen Password Security
Encourage employees to use strong, unique passwords that are at least 12 characters long. Phrases that are easy to remember but hard to guess work best. Avoid reusing passwords across different accounts—especially between personal and work accounts. Consider using two-factor authentication for extra security.
3. Be Cautious with Emails and Links
Train employees to recognize phishing attempts. They should never open emails, links, or attachments from unknown sources. Spam filters help block suspicious emails, but staying vigilant is key to preventing cyber threats.
4. Regularly Back Up Data
Set up automatic backups to protect important work. Employees should also know when and how to save their files to avoid losing critical data in case of a cyberattack or technical failure.
5. Report Suspicious Activity
Encourage employees to speak up if they notice anything unusual on their computers. Early reporting can prevent cyber threats from spreading and protect company data from further exposure.
Stay Prepared with Cyber Insurance
Even with the best security measures in place, data breaches can still happen. Cyber insurance can help protect your business from financial losses due to cyberattacks. Talk to an independent insurance agent to find the right coverage for your needs.
By following these simple steps and staying aware, you can reduce the risk of cyber threats and keep your business safe.
